Peer Observation

During a recent peer observation session, I had the opportunity to observe a demonstration in which my peer (HS/TE18/0046) taught a lesson on "WH question forms" to grade 9 ESL students. It is worth noting that our batchmates served as the students for this demonstration. My peer employed several classroom management techniques, including eliciting with hinting and signposting, explaining, giving instructions, and using positive reinforcement. One notable strength of my peer's teaching approach was her clear instructions and well-structured lesson planning. The instructions provided were precise and suited to the grade 9 level, contributing to effective classroom management. Reflective Summary

In the teaching demonstration, I focused on teaching the "ing form" to grade 4 ESL learners, which provided valuable insights into my teaching abilities and areas for improvement. Throughout the lesson, I employed various classroom techniques, including explanation, instruction, elicitation, and feedback. I began by explaining the "ing form" concept in a simple and comprehensible manner, considering the grade 4 students' level. I provided practical examples and used a mnemonic approach by equating the Sinhala term " මින් " to "ing" in English. This method aimed to make the concept more memorable and accessible to young learners, a strength I recognized in my teaching approach. Feedback played a pivotal role in assessing student understanding and offering guidance. I promptly provided feedback on their responses, helping to correct misconceptions and gauge the effectiveness of my teaching. The positive and supportive atmosphere fostered ...

Teaching Philosophy

In my view, teachers are the bedrock of education, laying the foundation for every student's journey. They guide and shape students toward their educational goals, serving as the gateway to a world of limitless potential. To excel as teachers, we must recognize each student's unique abilities and enable them to be their authentic selves. Like mentors, we must nurture their growth, smoothing their path toward educational heights. Respect and equity are the core values I hold dear as a teacher. Every student brings a unique background, potential, and perspective to the classroom. Upholding respect creates a safe and inclusive environment where all voices are heard and valued. Equally vital is ensuring equity, which eradicates biases and fosters a diverse yet inclusive atmosphere where all students can comfortably meet their needs. My approach aims to bring students of varying proficiency levels to a common ground, respecting their capabilities by delivering lessons that are compr...
