Peer Observation
During a recent peer observation session, I had the opportunity to observe a demonstration in which my peer (HS/TE18/0046) taught a lesson on "WH question forms" to grade 9 ESL students. It is worth noting that our batchmates served as the students for this demonstration. My peer employed several classroom management techniques, including eliciting with hinting and signposting, explaining, giving instructions, and using positive reinforcement.
One notable strength of
my peer's teaching approach was her clear instructions and well-structured
lesson planning. The instructions provided were precise and suited to the grade
9 level, contributing to effective classroom management. Additionally, she used
the eliciting method, hinting at answers and signposting the direction of the
lesson, which encouraged student participation.
My peer's use of
mnemonics added an interesting and engaging element to the lesson, which was
well-received by the grade 9 students. It provided an effective way to enhance
memory retention and engagement at this level.
In terms of presentation
skills, my peer demonstrated good voice projection and clarity in her
explanations. However, there were some minor pronunciation errors that could
benefit from improvement, particularly when considering the grade level and the
importance of clear pronunciation.
A commendable aspect of
my peer's teaching was her effective time management. The lesson progressed
smoothly within the allotted time frame, ensuring that all planned activities
were covered adequately. The explanation provided struck a balance between
simplicity and depth, suitable for grade 9 students.
Positive reinforcement
played a pivotal role in my peer's teaching strategy, effectively engaging the
grade 9 students. The encouragement and praise given to the students enhanced
their participation and enthusiasm throughout the lesson.
During the group
activity, my peer effectively managed the students, providing guidance and
monitoring their progress. This ensured that the activity was conducted
smoothly, contributing to the overall success of the demonstration.
In summary, my peer
demonstrated several strengths, including clear instructions, creative activity
planning, and effective classroom management techniques, all tailored to the
grade 9 level. While there is room for minor improvement in pronunciation, the
overall lesson was well-received and aligned with the students' grade level. It
was an insightful observation that provided valuable insights into effective
teaching practices for grade 9 students.
